Depoliticizing Gender

One really pernicious aspect of pop theories of gender (e.g. queer theory) is how they rotate the gender hierarchy to appear horizontal. With this rhetorical/pictorial sleight of hand, the oppressive power relation between men and women is not depicted as a hierarchy but rather as a neutral flat line, a ‘spectrum’, as if gender is just a ‘level playing field’ and not at all the imposed roles of oppressor and oppressed.
